Onion Bhaji Recipe

I have been meaing to post an onion bhaji recipe for a while as they are a great easy treat for people with various food intolerances. Aurelia’s comment (on Farinata recipe) earlier this week reminded me.

Onion bhaji ingredients :

  • 4oz Gram flour (chick pea/besan flour)
  • 2 onions, finely sliced
  • 1 tsp fresh coriander, chopped
  • ½ tsp of turmeric
  • chillis (to taste), de-seeded and finely chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 cup of water
  • Oil, for frying

Onion bhaji recipe steps :

Sieve the gram flour into a bowl and then add all the other dry ingredients – mix together thoroughly.

Add the water gradually, mixing it in a bit at a time. You want a mixture that is just gloopy enough to dribble off a spoon. Put the mixture in the fridge until ready to fry.

Deep fry batches of the onion bhaji mixture for 2-3 minutes, until golden brown. I mould a tablespoon of the mixture in a ball before frying to help keep the shape.

This onion bhaji recipe is really easy to make and also really suitable for lots of food intolerances.

    Hi Miranda!
    I have been looking at so many recipes on your site, and have saved many of them!!
    My diet requires me to stay away from
    wheat
    sugar
    salt
    corn
    gluten
    pasteurised milk

    I find it tough to find recipes that fit all of this criteria, but find it so much easier when i stumble upon blogs like yours, where I find that there actually are things I can have that still taste good!
    This whole diet has made me much more creative and inventive in the kitchen and I am not afraid to experiment at all!

    With this recipe in particular, the problem is the deep frying! the same problem is with tempura! Im going to try and make these this weekend in a pan, with a small amount of coconut oil. [I cant have other oils] I know, I know!! bhajis are supposed to be deep fried! and I know they wont be the same! but if I even come close I will be happy!

    After reading Amy’s post I feel so guilty about being able to eat anything (except maybe cars etc !).
    This is a great easy recipe. I did use weak re-hydrated milk powder in the water and used some of the chilli seeds to kick it. I also prefer less greasy sauteed so slightly flattened blobs of mixture in a pan, turning occasionally till brown.
